Chinese Large Table Screen with Stone and Landscape Panels
This impressive Chinese table screen is beautifully crafted in exotic rosewood with a decorative stone panel on one side and a painted landscape on the other. Table screens such as this typically served as standard decor in a Chinese scholar’s study, often situated on the scholar’s desk.
The polychrome decorated stone panel features an assortment of items on a green ground with detailed artistry and likely have specific meanings according to Chinese culture. The reverse side is filled by a lavish Chinese landscape scene. In addition to the symbolic meanings of the elements portrayed in this wonderful piece, all would also be considered auspicious.
The expertly crafted rosewood structure features a serpentine base embellished with ornamental carvings and supports the frame embellished with a meander border, carved scrolling foliates, and fretwork brackets. Most notable perhaps are two large and colorful guardian protectors, one on each side symbolizing power and nobility.
