American Gothic Hall Clock by Colonial Clock Co. of Zeeland, Michigan
This American hall clock by the Colonial Clock Co. of Zeeland, Michigan, is a testament to the artistry of early 20th-century clockmaking. Dating to the 1930s, this clock exudes a grand presence and dramatic Gothic revival style.
At its heart lies a high-grade movement crafted by the esteemed Winterhalter & Hoffmeier of Schwarzenbach, Germany. The 8-day three-weight movement keeps time with a three-jar mercury-compensating pendulum and orchestrates a symphony of chimes, offering a choice between the iconic Westminster, Whittington, or Winchester melodies. The tunes resonate beautifully through nine tubular bells, filling the air with enchanting harmonies.
The clock’s presence is further elevated by its rare special-order brass filagree dial, adorned with intricate wirework overlays. Cast brass Arabic numerals mark the hours, complemented by pierced and blued steel hands that gracefully sweep across the dial. On either side, two subsidiary dials offer convenient control over tune selection, strike, and silent, allowing users to tailor the clock’s ambiance to their preferences. Above, a moon dial with globes is nestled amidst the arch, adding a touch of celestial mystique.
The clock’s case is crafted of rich mahogany and displays classic Gothic motifs. The doors and base boast eye-catching carved arches, while turned columns rise on either side of the case. The hood features wonderful detailing, with carved finials adorning its apex, adding a regal flair to its silhouette.
Every aspect, from its carved mahogany casing to its ornate dial and melodious chimes, makes this clock an incredible addition to any collection or home and a wonderful heirloom to treasure for generations to come.
