American Silver Plate Castor Set with Multi-color Bottles by Meriden
A charming castor set produced by the Meriden Silver Plate Company of Connecticut. Meriden was esteemed for their high-quality silver plate products, many of which incorporated a sectional plating technique that deposited extra amounts of silver to high-wear areas.
This beautiful set is uniquely comprised of blue, amber, and Vaseline multi-colored glass containers, an option that was originally offered in the Meridan catalogs. A rarity with its multi-color presentation, it would have been an opulent accent to the elaborate Victorian table. The six-piece set features two bottles for salt and pepper, three bottles for various oils and vinegars, and a small pot with a plated spoon for dried mustard powder. The glass is crafted in a button and cross pattern, and each of the three liquid bottles are fitted with cut glass stoppers. All reside in a lovely silver-plated pedestal stand with a simple loop handle. The stand is delicately embellished with floral and linear engravings inspired by the Aesthetic Movement.
A very important piece of American Victorian serveware, the castor set is still relevant today and avidly collected.
