French Double Corniche Case Automaton Carriage Clock
This incredible automaton carriage clock is a delight for the senses and a wonder of French clockmaking. Resting atop the clock is an upper case displaying an enchanting bird automaton perched atop a rock. Fashioned with real feathers and placed amongst flowers, leaves, and branches to resemble the forest, the charming bird rotates and raises its head at the strike of each hour and performs on demand.
Within the clock below is a sophisticated 8-day movement with an hour and half-hour bell strike and alarm. The time displays on a porcelain dial with black Roman numerals with a subsidiary dial to control the alarm feature.
Singing and moving birds were among the most challenging automata to execute in their day. An intricate system of cams, levers, and gears must be masterfully handcrafted into a compact space to bring these beautiful automatons to life. Today, bird automata are some of the most collectible automata pieces, prized for their fine artistry and advanced mechanical skill.
This delightful automation clock bears a complete restoration and a one-year warranty.
