French Gilt Brass Oval Grand Sonnerie Carriage Clock

This unusual French carriage clock boasts several rare characteristics. First, the gilt brass case features a unique oval design with expertly curved beveled glass on each side. The time displays upon Roman numerals with Arabic numeral minute markers with unusual fleur de lis hands and an alarm dial below the 6 o’clock position. Next, the distinctive porcelain dial, signed by Theo B. Starr, features wonderful hand-painted blue scrollwork in the center and between each numeral.

Most notably, the clock boasts an eight-day jeweled lever escapement Grand Sonnerie movement, which adds further complexity rarity to the clock. A true grand complication of horology, the Grande Sonnerie audibly announces the time with accuracy every 15 minutes by striking the current quarter-hour and hour every 15 minutes. The hour and half hour, respectively, strike on their own separately tuned gongs to denote each strike’s difference. A three-position sonnerie adjustment lever on the underside of the clock allows the user the option of setting the clock to strike the hour and quarter hours, quarter hours only, or silent.

This masterful clock bears a complete restoration and a one-year warranty.
