German Art Nouveau Porcelain Soup Tureen by Mettlach
This porcelain soup tureen is a beautiful example from esteemed German manufacturer Mettlach. Named for the village it resided in, Mettlach became the most famous of the seven factories belonging to the famed German ceramic company Villeroy & Boch (V&B). Mettlach was celebrated for its use of various pottery techniques, such as Chromolith, printed underglaze (PUG), and Phanolith, with collections of its pieces going on to be exhibited at World Fairs in both Europe and the United States.
This wonderful Art Nouveau-era soup tureen features a large, rounded form showcasing celebratory scenes on either side reminiscent of Dutch Baroque stylings, with beautiful flowing natural form patterns evocative of Nouveau design. The artwork is likely accomplished using the Phanolith technique, characterized by white porcelain figures on a colored background. The fine craftsmanship and detailed artistry make it a treasured collectible of early 20th-century German porcelain.
