English Flame Mahogany Tall Case Clock by Thomas Dean
This splendid tall case clock is a beautiful example of traditional English design. The case takes on a classic, elegant shape with fluted columns and a graceful swan neck pediment top. Two slender columns support the bonnet with elegant hand-painted detail across the top. Housed in a richly colored flame mahogany case, the clock features exquisite grain throughout.
Residing inside the bonnet of the clock is an unusual hand-painted square iron dial displaying the time on Roman numeral hours and Arabic minute markers with engraved brass hands. The dial center displays a subsidiary seconds dial and a moon dial below the 12 o’clock. The unique upside-down moon dial alternates between lovely paintings of a nautical ship scene and a pastoral scene between the waning and rising moons. Beautiful illustrations of sea shells in the dial mask and petite flower bouquets in the dial center accent the face wonderfully.
An 8-day weight-driven movement powers the clock, which will strike the hour on a bell.
The dial bears the signature of clockmaker Thomas Dean of Leigh, England.
