American Exceptional Silver Plate Equestrian Trophy

This beautiful silver-plated trophy was awarded to the winner of a harness race on October 10, 1890. It bears the custom engraved name of the winning trotting horse Maud, the winning time, and the race date. Harness racing in America was at its peak in the late 1800s. The lovely vase form trophy with floral and foliate handles is raised on four feet and is elaborately embellished with castings of horse heads, horseshoes, crops, and helmets. It also features engraved florals and a race scene. And finally, this highly decorative trophy is stamped Meriden B. Company and Quadruple Plate. Meriden Brittania was known for high-quality craftsmanship and, as in this case, extra deposits of silver in their plating.
