English Red Tortoise Shell Boulle Style Clock
This fabulous English mantel clock dates to the late 1800s and is a wonderful example of the grandeur and refinement of the Boulle style. Named after the renowned French cabinetmaker André-Charles Boulle, who perfected this work, pieces of this variety are famously characterized by richly colored tortoiseshell marquetry, elaborate brass ornamentation, and dramatic curved lines. This clock exemplifies the Boulle technique beautifully with a case adorned in rich red tortoiseshell veneer and cast bronze ormolu mounts, adding a regal touch to the luxurious design.
The clock features a porcelain dial elegantly signed in the center by Payne & Co., located on London’s prestigious New Bond Street. Framed by an ornate cast brass dial mask, the time displays on finely painted Roman cartouche hour numerals, Arabic minute markers, and gracefully styled hands. At its heart lies an 8-day chain fusee driven timepiece movement.
This fantastic clock is an extraordinary example of 19th-century craftsmanship and artistry, perfect for collectors and appreciators alike.
This clock bears a complete restoration and a one-year warranty.
