German Singing Bird Box by Karl Griesbaum
The renowned Karl Griesbaum crafted this magical Art Deco period singing bird automaton. The lever on the outside of the case releases the lid, and a charming bird automaton emerges. Adorned with intricate hand placed feathers, this little bird sings a delightful tune while moving his wings, beak, and tail feathers. Singing bird boxes are among the most challenging automata to execute not just in mechanical skill, but artistry. An intricate system of cams, levers, and sliding whistles must be masterfully handcrafted into a compact space to bring this beautiful automaton to life. The bird resides in a brass case with filigree detail on the lid and the case.
The Griesbaum firm is among the most recognized makers of singing bird boxes. Founded in the early 20th century, Griesbaum not only created mechanical marvels such as bird boxes but were innovators in producing whistler automatons and singing bird cages.
A fully restored spring-driven mechanism powers this bird box, which comes with a one year warranty.
