Alabaster Bust entitled “Daphne” signed A. Cipriani
This ethereal early 20th-century sculpture depicts Daphne, the Grecian nymph from ancient mythology. Beautifully crafted from alabaster, the bust is adorned with a laurel wreath and gown, both painted a rich bronze-colored hue, creating a striking contrast. The entire piece rests on a solid green marble base.
Daphne’s story is one of beauty and tragedy. The ethereal nymph had the unfortunate fate of attracting the attention of the god Apollo. Apollo pursued Daphne until she became so tired that she called upon Gaea for aid. In response, Gaea transformed Daphne into a laurel tree, forever shielding her from Apollo’s advances. The laurel tree then became a lasting symbol of Apollo, with its wreaths representing victory and honor in ceremonies and rituals throughout history.
The faint signature of A. Cipriani on the back suggests that this piece is attributed to Italian sculptor Adolfo Cipriani (1857-1941).
