American Empire Style Gilt Wood Mirror
A stately 19th century American gilt wood overmantle mirror in the Empire style. Mirrors dating to this period were status symbols and intended to draw attention. This eye-catching example features a molded cornice with applied balls at each corner, over a frieze with reeded and barley twist decoration. The frame is sectioned into three mirrors, each flanked by barley twist columns. A flourish of beading embellishes the base. A mirror of rich substance and suited to a variety of decorative schemes.
