Rare American Victor 78 RPM “Schoolhouse” Phonograph
This rare and delightful Victor 78 RPM phonograph, dubbed the “schoolhouse model,” dates to the early 1900s and was intended for use in schools or learning facilities to teach music or singing. The machine resides in a wonderfully crafted and sturdy 1/4 sawn oak cabinet with a beautiful smooth oak horn for a clear, defined sound.
A pull-out shelf in the front offers a convenient makeshift surface to place records while using the machine, while the lid can be removed and hung from the back of the machine when in use. This unique cabinet design also features a hinged bottom storage shelf, which can be swung up, allowing the detachable horn to slide effortlessly underneath along the X-shaped support bracket. This allowed the lid to close completely over the turntable and arm for safe storage when not in use.
Phonograph models such as this would have been desirable and a wonderful luxury for a school to own. Victor often awarded public schools discounted pricing, as putting these machines in schools served marvelously to promote Victor products amongst teachers, parents, and of course, young listeners and future phonograph buyers!
This delightful music machine is fully restored and carries a one-year warranty.
