Austrian Glass Box with Gilt Bronze Ormolu and Enamel Portrait
This delightful Austrian glass box dates to the late 1800’s. Framed within gilt bronze ormolu exhibiting various detailed ornamentation and framing a central enamel portrait on the lid. The handpainted polychrome enamel portrait depicts a young beauty with long flowing hair and headdress. The hinged glass box has beveled corners and displays artistic wheel engraving. Copper-wheel engraving is a specialty skill where, using a lathe, copper disks of various sizes and rim profiles engrave the glass in a grinding manner. A lovely little work of art and decorative from the past.
