Chinese Large Bracket Clock in Rosewood

This beautiful and unique timepiece dating to 1840 represents a Chinese interpretation of the popular English bracket clock. Superbly crafted in exotic rosewood and presented on its original raised stand with cabriole legs. The case is ornately embellished with vine motif piercework in the front and back of the base, as well as applied scrolls at the front corners. Carvings, fretwork with red backgrounds, and Mother-of-pearl floral inlays add further ornamentation to this lovely piece.

Keeping the time within is an 8-day, two-train fusee movement with a crown wheel verge escapement that marks the quarter hours with a strike on two bells. The time displays on a convex porcelain dial with Roman numerals and rather unique hands, perhaps a Chinese interpretation of moon or Breguet style hands, and a sweep seconds hand. Surrounding the dial is a wonderfully engraved cast brass mask with floral and foliate motifs, flags, and a meander border. Also, the backplate of the clockworks is decoratively machine-turned and engraved with a signature in Chinese script at the center.

And finally, this enchanting clock bears a complete restoration and a one-year warranty.
