French Boulle Style Tortoiseshell Bracket Clock
This stunning French bracket clock was exquisitely crafted in the Boulle style. Andre-Charles Boulle defined this style during his period as a cabinetmaker to Louis XIV in the 1700s when he mastered the dramatic use of tortoiseshell and brass inlays. Thereafter, the opulent style of the Boulle form clock was never to be overlooked.
This lovely example was expertly crafted with red tortoiseshell veneer on the characteristic undulating case. Exquisite embellishments of brass marquetry and gilt bronze ormolu adorn the case throughout. Further ornamentation is exhibited by a trumpeting herald atop and a gilt brass putto among flora beneath the dial mounted to the conforming glass door
Keeping the time within is an 8-day pendulum movement with a clear bell strike announcing the hour and half-hour, and the pendulum features the Sun King face of Louis XIV. The time displays on an ornate cast brass dial fitted with porcelain Roman numeral cartouche, porcelain Arabic minute markers, and blued steel trident hands. The movement is signed H&H, Paris.
Finally, this wonderful timepiece bears a complete restoration and a one-year warranty.
