French Carriage Clock by Cooke & Kelvey
An elegant French carriage clock dating to the late 1800s and retailed by Cooke & Kelvey of Calcutta (now Kolkata). Established in the mid-1850’s, Cooke & Kelvey was the premier retailer of luxury jewelry, timepieces, and metals in British India, an area of provinces under British rule (1850’s – 1940’s). They were renowned silversmiths, a heritage that carries forth today as they continue to retail the same high-quality goods and silver in New Delhi.
This beautiful carriage clock dates to 1880 and features expert craftsmanship. The case is fitted with fluted 3/4 columns; turned capitals, feet, and finials; fretwork framing on all sides, and a conforming handle.
Keeping the time within and visible through the glass side panels is an 8-day mechanical movement. A pleasing gong strike marks the hour and half-hour, and a repeat-at-will button is located atop. The time displays on a Roman-numeralled dial fitted with spade hands and is wonderfully integrated into a painted and fired porcelain panel depicting a formal English woodland hunt scene.
And finally, this delightful carriage clock bears a full restoration and a one-year warranty.
