French Gothic Revival Sideboard of the Hunchback of Notre Dame
This breathtaking French sideboard brings Victor Hugo’s legendary story of the Hunchback of Notre Dame to life. Dating to the late 1800s, this astonishing piece is crafted entirely of richly colored walnut with masterfully executed carvings and incredible detail. The centerpiece of this impressive cabinet is an intricate depiction of the famed Tavern Dance scene, carved in high sculptural relief on the center door of the upper cabinet. In the foreground, the enchanting Esmeralda dances with tambourine in hand and her loyal goat Djali by her side. Behind her, the iconic characters of Quasimodo and Monseigneur Claude Frollo gaze on.
The entire sideboard pays homage to Notre Dame Cathedral by capturing elements of the iconic architecture throughout. Repeating patterns seen on the Cathedral’s windows and archway medallions can be seen carved in amazing details on the cabinet doors, while the building’s iconic Gothic archways are replicated along the tops of the shelving. An interpretation of the Cathedral’s famous gargoyles even make an appearance across the front of the cabinet.
