French Monumental Cartel Mantel Clock
This highly ornate nineteenth century cartel clock represents attributes often associated with French clocks. Most notably, the gilt bronze rococo case utilizes themes and decor styles typical of the times. A helmet with weaponry sits at the top of the clock. Other weapons intersect a crown in the center. A pair of dolphins flank the crown. Floral and foliate designs flow down from a face in the center of the case. A recumbent lion appears on a separate base below the clock. Finally, compound curved glass lines the case’s open work. The presence of all these characteristics suggests royal ownership.
The bronze dial is engraved and has porcelain cartouche Roman numerals. Also, the clock maker Lerolle Freres of Paris is noted on small porcelain plaques . The clock’s two train fifteen day movement strikes a bell on the hour and half hour. The clock is restored and has a one year warranty.
