French Unusual Champlevé Enamel Mantel Clock
This fine looking French champlevé mantel clock has some wonderful features. It has a very appealing color palette of rich crimson and cream, accented by blues, lavenders, greens, and yellows. It also features lovely gilt bronze ormolu mounts, and a darling cherub sitting atop peeking into a looking glass.
An 8-day movement keeps the time with a gentle gong strike at the hour and half hour. The cast brass dial with deep relief features Roman numerals on cartouches, a decorative enameled center, and trèfle or clover hands. Also the dial is signed “Spaulding & Co., Chicago and Paris”. Further, this lovely clock has been restored and has a one year warranty.
Revisiting Champlevé: Tiny cells or depressions are carved or cast into the metal, leaving raised metal borders between the cells and forming the design outline. The cells are then filled with powdered glass and fired.
