Italian Art Nouveau Era Carved Wood and Mica Glass Chandelier
This unique Italian chandelier dating to 1930 portrays an artistic departure from the previous structures of the opulent Victorian years and embraces more natural elements and forms. In this wonderful example, dark richly grained wood and black iron serve for the structure crafted with two moulded circular tiers. Each tier is artfully embellished with scrolling foliates in a similar wood. The larger and lower tier is further decorated with carved and applied cloaked figures and half columns. Coinciding with the new aesthetic forms of this period, glass art was also evolving. In this case mica glass was used, comprising glass skillfully layered with thin sheets of mica and achieving a translucence that emits a warm ethereal glow.
This distinctive period lighting fixture will make a wonderful accent piece and is well-suited to a variety of locations.
