Japanese Pair of Unusual Satsuma Vases
Japanese Satsuma ware features elaborately decorated cream colored porcelain bodies. Primarily made for export in various Japanese cities in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Satsuma features gilded polychromatic enamel overglaze designs.
These vases display images of Japanese immortals and also courtly women or geishas. Village landscapes provide a backdrop. Intricate patterns and designs further decorate the vases. Finally, a signature chop appears on the bottom of the vase.
The vases have an unusual off-round shape, slightly flattened on two sides.
