Monumental German Trumpeter Clock by Emilian Wehrle of Furtwangen

Introducing a monumental German trumpeter clock by master of Black Forest clockmaking, Emilian Wehrle of Furtwangen, Germany. Dating to the mid-1870s, this example is a testament to the Black Forest’s rich horological tradition.

The clock resides in an imposing, heavily carved oak Black Forest case that immediately commands attention. Intricate depictions of two lifelike hunting dogs and a downed stag nestled within a forest scene envelop the case in remarkable detail. The surrounding woodwork brings the natural world to life with leaves, vines, and berries, creating a vivid and picturesque woodland tableau. At the pinnacle of the case, a magnificent spread-winged eagle reigns over the scene.

A well-crafted 8-day two-train movement truly makes this clock exceptional, keeping time while simultaneously delighting the senses. At the strike of each hour, a large pin barrel will play melodious heraldic music. The music will sound on six trumpet horns driven by bellows and tuned reeds in the organ chamber. As the melody plays, the front door of the clock will open. Two miniature trumpeters magically emerge from double doors to perform their enchanting tune.

The wood dial is a work of art in itself. White porcelain cartouche Roman numerals in a rich cobalt blue display the time, providing a striking contrast to the dark, ornate background. The clock’s hands are intricately and delicately carved from bone, further displaying the immense attention to detail that went into the clock’s creation.

This extraordinary clock is a rare find, blending timekeeping precision, musical enchantment, and exquisite woodwork. Trumpeter clocks are among the rarest of the German Black Forest clocks and are highly sought after by collectors. This particular example, made by the master of this genre, Emile Wehrle, is a true delight to own. This is the third Wehrle trumpeter clock our shop has had the privilege to sell over the past 48 years, and one of the best examples we have ever seen. Owning a clock such as this is acquiring a piece of history. This piece is a true objet d’art that tells a story of masterful craftsmanship and passion for horology.

This incredible clock bears a complete restoration and a one-year warranty.
