Mother-of-Pearl Gaming Chip Pendant
This charming antique pendant was fashioned from a Chinese gaming chip. Used for card games, Mother-of-pearl gaming chips were must-haves for the aristocracy and well-to-do of the 18th and early 19th centuries. Most were custom-ordered and transported to Europe and the United States during the momentous China Trade period.
This lovely example has been framed in 14K yellow gold and dangles from a 14K yellow gold cable chain. It showcases the skilled hand-engraving and cross-hatching techniques the Chinese were so admired for. The front depicts a pair of lovebirds centered in a floral surround, while the reverse has a geometric pattern. Due to the allure of their beauty, lustre, and artistry, the chips evolved into unique and timeless jewelry pieces.
