Musical Sewing Necessaire
This wonderful musical sewing necessaire hails from the highly ornamental Victorian era, when even the practical and necessary leaned toward luxury. Beginning with a beautifully handcrafted case in exotic Burl Amboyna raised on ball feet, and the top adorned with floral ormolu and a bronze horse head knob. A lift of the hinged top reveals the mirror-lined lid and a blue velvet-lined interior with sewing necessaire tray. Fitted into the specific niches of the tray are an embroidered pincushion, spoked thread bobbins, needle case, thimble, scissors, awl, and scent bottle. Further, the necessaire tray lifts out to reveal storage and a Swiss two-tune cylinder music box inset to the bottom of the case. The materials, craftsmanship, and decorative implements of this charming necessaire defined it as a symbol of status; the musical component would have been an additional extravagance and a delight.
