Referred to as a Tambour Timbres (translating to bells and drums) or orchestra box, this enchanting musical machine features drums and bells to play in accompaniment with the musical cylinder. This rare and early configuration is uniquely designed with the accompanying instruments hidden beneath the cylinder, a precursor to the later orchestra boxes that were eventually built to put the instruments on display.
This exquisite machine plays six delightful tunes, with the original tune card preserved and affixed to the inside of the lid. The elegant case is crafted from rich black walnut and adorned with subtle banded inlays. Dating to the mid-1870s, this music box exemplifies the artistry and continued mechanical advancement of 19th-century Swiss automated instrument makers, making it a treasured collector’s item or charming addition to any space.
