Rare Stella Grand Double Comb Disc Music Box by Mermod Frères
This exceptionally rare music box was produced by one of the most revered makers of Swiss music boxes, Mermod Frères of Geneva, Switzerland. Mermod rose to fame with some of the finest examples of cylinder music boxes in the early 1800s; they evolved to produce disc music boxes as the market for cylinders began to fade in the late 1890s. Marketing under the names Stella and Mira, the Stella models represented one of the most illustrious examples Mermod offered at that time. The Stella Grand line of boxes were distinguished by their ornate cases and fine double-combed movements.
This model, dating to the early 1900s, was marketed by Imhof & Mukle of London. It is housed in a stunning Honduran mahogany cabinet and plays 17 1/2″ discs. The case is lavishly embellished with wonderful Art Nouveau boxwood marquetry on the facia and lid. It is also fitted with a drop-down panel revealing a compartment for disc storage and easy access to the 12 original discs. And, of course, the expertly crafted double comb movement by Mermod Frères ensures a delightfully rich and melodious sound.
Mounted on an elegant stand, this Swiss Stella Grand music box embodies the luxurious craftsmanship of the early 20th century. Expert musical mechanics and fine cabinetry make this a rare and desirable music box for enthusiasts and collectors.
