Ship’s Wheel Clock by the Chelsea Clock Company of Boston

This exquisite ship’s wheel clock, crafted by the prestigious Chelsea Clock Company of Boston, is a testament to the fine American clockmaking of the early 20th century. Encased in a robust cast brass housing, the clock features a distinctive flared base and a ship’s wheel encircling the dial, embodying the maritime spirit.

The clock operates with an 8-day movement, utilizing a jeweled balance wheel escapement for precise timekeeping. Additionally, it boasts a ship’s bell strike mechanism, adding an authentic touch to its maritime heritage.

The dial is made of silvered brass, displaying the time with cast bronze Arabic numerals. The hands are designed in the elegant Breguet style, enhancing the clock’s classic aesthetic. Signed by the retailer Samuel Hammond of New York, this timepiece not only serves as a functional maritime instrument but also as a piece of historical art, reflecting the craftsmanship and design sensibilities of the era.

This nautically-inspired clock bears a full restoration and a one-year warranty.

Ships Bell Striking:  The code is based on a crew’s typical workday routine while a vessel is underway. A ship at sea requires constant attention throughout the day’s 24 hours. Therefore, the day is divided into six four-hour periods that are each called a “watch.” A single bell denoted the end of the first half-hour, and one bell was added each half-hour. Eight bells, therefore, signaled the end of each four-hour watch. (ChelseaClock)
